AC Milan and Torino FC share the spoils after spectacular 2-2 draw in Serie A
AC Milan and Torino FC kicked off the new Serie A season with a 2-2 draw. The Milanese fell behind twice but managed to salvage a point in the closing stages, thanks in part to a debut goal from Álvaro Morata and a late strike from Noah Okafor.
Torino take the initiative early
It was Torino FC who set the tone in the opening stages. After thirty minutes, the deadlock was broken at the San Siro: an own goal handed the visitors a surprising lead. Milan struggled to get a grip on the match and went into the dressing room at half-time trailing by a goal.
Duván Zapata extends Torino's lead
In the second half, around the hour mark, the match appeared to be over. Torino FC's Colombian striker Duván Zapata made it 0-2 in the 68th minute. Valentino Lazaro's cross was the assist: Zapata simply had to finish and put his side in a seemingly commanding position.
Morata and Okafor rescue a point for AC Milan
Milan, however, refused to give up. Former Atlético Madrid forward Álvaro Morata, who had earlier unsuccessfully attempted to win a penalty, opened his account for AC Milan with a goal in the dying stages, assisted by Tijjani Reijnders. And as if that were not enough, Noah Okafor sealed the final score at 2-2 deep into stoppage time, in the 90th minute, with Yunus Musah providing the assist for that crucial equaliser.
Fonseca critical after his Serie A debut as Milan manager
Speaking afterwards, manager Fonseca — experiencing his competitive baptism as AC Milan head coach — was critical of his side's first-half display. 'I didn't expect us to be perfect straight away, but in the first 45 minutes we were passive and lacked intensity. In the second half we were more aggressive up front and had enough chances to win the match. We need to keep working; there is still plenty to improve,' said Fonseca.
Outlook: busy schedule ahead for both clubs
Both sides face a packed fixture list in the coming weeks. AC Milan take on Parma on 24 August, host Lazio on 31 August and welcome Venezia on 15 September. Torino FC face Atalanta on 25 August, meet Venezia on 30 August and host Lecce on 15 September.
