AC Milan make sweeping changes after missing Champions League: Allegri and entire board dismissed
AC Milan have sacked manager Massimiliano Allegri following a disappointing season that ended with a fifth-place finish in Serie A and failure to qualify for Champions League football. Chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada have also been shown the door at the Italian giants.
Dramatic final day seals fate of Allegri and board
A painful 2-1 defeat away at Cagliari on the final day of the Serie A season proved fatal for AC Milan and their coaching staff. The result saw the club drop from third to fifth in the standings, with a Champions League place slipping through their fingers as a consequence. Instead, they will have to settle for Europa League football next season. For the club's American owners, it was the last straw: not only manager Massimiliano Allegri, but the entire sporting leadership was shown the exit the very same day.
RedBird Capital calls it a failed season
Investment fund RedBird Capital, which acquired AC Milan in 2022, left little to the imagination in an official statement. The owners pointed out that following last season's disappointing eighth-place finish, the club had been given a clear mandate: return to the Champions League and lay the foundations for sustained success in Serie A. For much of the campaign, that objective appeared within reach. "For a large part of the season we were in the top two in the table, with a genuine chance of competing for the title," the club's owners stated. "However, the season ended far below our standards and Sunday's disappointing defeat made this season a failure."
Allegri leaves Milan for the second time
Massimiliano Allegri had been appointed last May as the successor to Sérgio Conceição, who had been dismissed shortly beforehand. It was familiar territory for the Italian coach, who had previously been in charge of AC Milan between 2010 and 2014. His second stint in the fashion capital of Italy has now also come to a premature end, under the weight of poor results. The Italian title, meanwhile, once again went to city rivals and arch-enemies Internazionale.
