Ajax suffer painful defeat at NAC Breda in Eredivisie clash
Ajax endured a disappointing 2-1 defeat at NAC Breda's Rat Verlegh Stadion on Sunday. In a tense Eredivisie encounter, Ajax appeared to be heading for a draw, but a late injury-time strike handed the hosts the victory.
Goalless first half as NAC Breda take the initiative
The opening 45 minutes at the Rat Verlegh Stadion produced no goals. Both sides kept each other well in check and headed into the break level. It was only in the second half that the Eredivisie visitors truly came to life.
Garbett opens the scoring, Hato responds for Ajax
In the 58th minute, Matthew Garbett broke the deadlock. The NAC Breda forward opened the scoring after being well set up by Elías Már Ómarsson. Ajax, however, refused to lie down. Five minutes later, in the 63rd minute, Jorrel Hato drew the visitors level. The defender capitalised on an assist from Steven Berghuis to restore parity at 1-1.
Jan Van den Bergh settles the contest in injury time
Just when a point for Ajax looked the most likely outcome, NAC Breda struck decisively. Deep into injury time, it was Jan Van den Bergh who slotted home the decisive 2-1, assisted by Raul Paula. A bitter blow for Ajax, who return from Breda empty-handed.
Busy schedule ahead for both clubs
NAC Breda continue their Eredivisie campaign with away fixtures against FC Utrecht on 24 August and SC Heerenveen on 31 August, before hosting Fortuna Sittard on 14 September. Ajax also face a demanding run of fixtures: first an away trip to Fortuna Sittard on 25 August, then the top-of-the-table clash against Feyenoord on 1 September, followed by a home game against FC Utrecht on 15 September.
