Arsenal begin the new season with a clear mission: to stop Manchester City from claiming a historic fifth consecutive league title. Pre-season provided encouragement, with the Gunners lifting the Emirates Cup after beating Lyon 2-0 in the final. The club has also been active in the transfer market, investing around £70 million in new signings. The most significant piece of business saw £45 million go to Bologna for defender Riccardo Calafiori, while goalkeeper David Raya, who spent last season on loan, was permanently signed for £32 million. Forward Matheus Cunha, who missed the last three pre-season fixtures, did return to training at Compton Park earlier this week, as did Boubacar Traore. Whether Cunha will be fit to feature on Saturday, however, remains in doubt. Right-back Nélson Semedo will definitely miss out through suspension.
