Carl Hoefkens potentially heading to OH Leuven after failed Eredivisie stint at NAC Breda
Carl Hoefkens (47) appears set to terminate his contract at NAC Breda ahead of schedule. The Belgian manager, who had insisted on staying despite relegation, is being strongly linked with OH Leuven as the successor to Felice Mazzu, according to Belgian media reports.
From 'I'm staying' to a potential exit
Following NAC Breda's relegation from the Eredivisie, Carl Hoefkens sounded resolute: he was 'not finished' at the Breda club and wanted to lead the rebuild. Not everyone in the fanbase shared that vision. Critical banners inside the stadium during the decisive relegation match made it abundantly clear that faith in his leadership was far from universal. Despite that, his public commitment to staying held firm — at least for the time being.
OH Leuven comes calling from Belgium
Now, however, the tide appears to be turning. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, Hoefkens is close to making the move to OH Leuven. The Belgian top-flight club is searching for a new head coach following the departure of Felice Mazzu and sees the 47-year-old as the right fit for a long-term project. For Hoefkens, it would represent a return to his home country, where he previously worked at Club Brugge and Standard Luik.
Relegation caps a turbulent debut season
Hoefkens took charge of NAC Breda in 2024 but was unable to keep the club in the Eredivisie. NAC finished in a relegation position and will compete in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie next season. As the manager still has a running contract in Breda, a compensation fee for NAC appears likely should he depart. No official confirmation from the club has been forthcoming as yet.
