Relegation looms for West Ham United after fresh defeat at Newcastle United

West Ham United suffered a heavy 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United and, with just one league game remaining, sit in eighteenth and last place in the Premier League. The London club are in danger of dropping out of England's top flight for the first time in thirteen years.
West Ham United on the brink
Relegation from the Premier League is becoming an increasingly real prospect for West Ham United. Following a painful 3-1 defeat at St. James' Park against Newcastle United, the London club remain rooted to eighteenth place in the standings with just one match left to play. West Ham United returned to the top flight in 2012 via the play-offs after a year's absence — and the threat of history repeating itself is now very much alive.
Dependent on others
The situation is particularly dire for West Ham United, as eighteenth place may already be unavoidable if rivals Tottenham Hotspur win at Chelsea on Monday evening or beat Everton at home the following week. The Hammers round off their own season with a home fixture against Leeds United, but even victory in that match may not be enough to secure their survival.
Summerville and Botman both featured but couldn't turn the tide
Crysencio Summerville, who is firmly in the picture with manager Ronald Koeman for a potential World Cup squad place with the Netherlands, started for West Ham United. The winger, however, was unable to make his mark on the game. On the opposite side, compatriot Sven Botman was solid at the heart of Newcastle United's defence.
Newcastle dominated, Castellanos pulled one back
Newcastle United were the better side throughout and headed into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead, courtesy of goals from Nick Woltemade and William Osula. Osula added a third shortly after the restart to seemingly put the result beyond doubt. West Ham United refused to give up, however: Valentín Castellanos pulled one back with a fine volley, and the same Argentinian — who had come on before half-time — also struck the post shortly afterwards. But a 3-1 scoreline was all the visitors had to show for their efforts.
