Bournemouth look to hit the ground running with debutant Evanilson
Bournemouth will be looking to give their home campaign an immediate boost with a victory over Newcastle United on Sunday. The Cherries opened the season with a 1-1 draw on the opening matchday thanks to a late goal, and have since strengthened their squad with club-record signing Evanilson. The Brazilian striker was brought in for a fee of no less than £40.2 million to fill the void left by the departing Dominic Solanke. The forward scored 13 goals in the Portuguese league for Porto last season and is poised to make his debut. 'Evanilson has trained well and will definitely be involved in the match,' manager Andoni Iraola declared at his press conference. Iraola is expected to opt for a 4-2-3-1 system with Semenyo leading the attack. There are concerns, however: Tyler Adams and Enes Ünal are both ruled out through injury. The statistics make for uncomfortable reading for the home side as well. In their last nine Premier League meetings with Newcastle, Bournemouth have managed just one win, with five draws and three defeats. Even more strikingly, in the month of August the club have gone eight matches without a victory, registering three draws and five losses.
Newcastle eyeing historic league start, Schär suspended
Newcastle United travel to the south coast on the back of a hard-fought but successful season opener. The Magpies beat Southampton 1-0 thanks to a goal from Joelinton just before half-time, but were forced to play the entire second half with ten men following a controversial red card for Fabian Schär in the 28th minute. That suspension carries over to Bournemouth, meaning Schär will be absent on Sunday. A win at Bournemouth would give Newcastle back-to-back opening league victories for the first time since the 1997/98 season. For manager Eddie Howe, however, the match also carries a personal dimension: he spent eleven years as a coach at Bournemouth before making the move to Newcastle in 2021. 'This is a game that means a great deal to us as a staff because of the time we spent at the club, but that has always been the case,' Howe said at his press conference. Nevertheless, he was emphatic that sporting ambition remains the priority. 'When you start a game, you go out there to win it and to give everything for those three points,' said the Newcastle head coach, who is expecting an emotional reunion with the Bournemouth fans. Howe is expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation with Alexander Isak as centre-forward, flanked by Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy.
