Third spell at the club
Maresca's appointment is far from a leap into the unknown. He knows the club well, as this will be his third stint at Manchester City. He previously managed the club's Elite Development Squad (EDS), guiding the team to the Premier League 2 title in the 2020/21 season. He also served as assistant to Pep Guardiola during the historic treble-winning campaign of 2023, when Manchester City claimed the league title, FA Cup and Champions League.

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak stated that Maresca and the club are an excellent match and that the Italian's style aligns seamlessly with Manchester City's core values. The chairman praised his personality, passion and ambition, describing the appointment as a logical and welcome step for both manager and club. CEO Ferran Soriano echoed this sentiment, calling Maresca the standout candidate in the search for a new head coach. Soriano pointed to his successes at Chelsea and Leicester, his proven track record with the EDS and his contribution to the treble season as key reasons for the appointment. According to Soriano, the club will give Maresca full support in the next phase of the club's development.
