FC Groningen banned from bringing away fans to ADO Den Haag following fireworks incident at Go Ahead Eagles
FC Groningen must play their first away fixture of the new Eredivisie season, on Sunday 16 August at ADO Den Haag, without travelling supporters. The professional football disciplinary committee has sanctioned the club following a fireworks incident in the away end during their away match at Go Ahead Eagles in December last year.
Fireworks in away end leads to heavy sanction
The professional football disciplinary committee has handed FC Groningen a severe punishment following a fireworks incident during their away match at Go Ahead Eagles last December. Groningen supporters set off fireworks in the away end, and the club is now paying a steep price: no FC Groningen away fans will be permitted to attend the first away game of the new season, against ADO Den Haag on Sunday 16 August.
Settlement proposal rejected, oral hearing held in Zeist
The punishment had been hanging over the club for some time. FC Groningen initially refused to accept the settlement proposal put forward by the professional football prosecutor, after which the case was heard orally in Zeist in May. The club maintained that it had taken adequate measures before, during and after the match to prevent disorder. However, the disciplinary committee disagreed and upheld the sanction that had been included in the original settlement proposal.
FC Groningen disappointed but accepts ruling
On the club's official website, FC Groningen stated that it is disappointed with the disciplinary committee's ruling. Nevertheless, the club sees no alternative but to accept the sanction. This means Groningen's supporters will have to miss the away fixture at ADO Den Haag on 16 August. A week later, another away match awaits: FC Groningen travel to Eindhoven to face reigning league champions PSV.
