Florian Wirtz earns Bayer 04 Leverkusen late victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach

Bayer 04 Leverkusen claimed a 3-2 Bundesliga victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Stadion im Borussia-Park. Florian Wirtz was the standout performer for the visitors, sealing the win as match-winner with a goal deep into stoppage time.
Leverkusen take early lead
It was Bayer 04 Leverkusen who came flying out of the blocks on Friday evening. After just twelve minutes the score was 1-0: Granit Xhaka found the back of the net to put his side ahead early in Mönchengladbach.
Wirtz doubles the advantage before half-time
Leverkusen were not done there. In the 38th minute, Florian Wirtz extended the lead to 2-0, superbly set up by Alejandro Grimaldo. The visitors headed into the dressing room with a comfortable two-goal cushion.
Mönchengladbach fight back
After the break, Borussia Mönchengladbach showed they had no intention of going quietly. In the 59th minute, Nico Elvedi pulled the hosts back to 2-1. With just five minutes remaining, the tension cranked up further as Tim Kleindienst levelled with an assist from Kevin Stöger. It looked as though Leverkusen were about to drop two points at the Stadion im Borussia-Park.
Wirtz decides it in stoppage time
But deep into added time, Florian Wirtz struck once more. The Bayer 04 Leverkusen attacking midfielder netted his second goal of the evening to make it 3-2, rescuing three crucial Bundesliga points for his side.
Looking ahead: busy schedule for both clubs
Both clubs face a packed run of Bundesliga fixtures in the coming weeks. Borussia Mönchengladbach travel to VfL Bochum 1848 on 31 August, host a home match on 14 September, and then make the trip to Eintracht Frankfurt on 21 September. Bayer 04 Leverkusen welcome RB Leipzig at home on 31 August, visit TSG Hoffenheim on 14 September, and round off that run with a home clash against VfL Wolfsburg on 22 September.
