Gordon earns Newcastle United a point in draw at AFC Bournemouth

Newcastle United fought back in the closing stages of a Premier League away fixture at AFC Bournemouth to earn a 1-1 draw. Anthony Gordon scored the equaliser in the 76th minute, after Marcus Tavernier had given the Cherries the lead just before half-time. After two rounds of fixtures, the two clubs stand on two and four points respectively.

Tavernier puts Bournemouth ahead

The match at the Vitality Stadium began cautiously, but it was AFC Bournemouth who broke the deadlock. In the 37th minute, Marcus Tavernier beat the Newcastle goalkeeper, assisted by Antoine Semenyo. The home side took that lead into the dressing room and appeared to be on course for a deserved victory.

Gordon rescues a point for Newcastle in the second half

Newcastle United showed resilience after the break and forced a draw through Anthony Gordon. The forward made the most of an assist from Harvey Barnes in the 76th minute to level the score at 1-1, sparing the northeast club a second league defeat in quick succession.

Iraola furious over VAR decision in stoppage time

The match had a dramatic finale. AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was incensed after a would-be winning goal from Dango Ouattara in stoppage time was ruled out by VAR for handball. 'We have very short sleeves, and the ball never touches Dango's skin. They send us the diagram to explain what a handball is, and now they make this decision,' said a frustrated Iraola afterwards.

Standings and outlook

After two Premier League rounds, AFC Bournemouth have two points, while Newcastle United have four. The Cherries' next league fixtures take them away to Everton on 31 August, before hosting Southampton on 14 September and travelling to Liverpool on 21 September. Newcastle United welcome Tottenham Hotspur on 1 September, visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on 15 September, and travel to Fulham on 21 September.
