Henk Brugge appointed as new head coach of Telstar: 'I won't shy away from this challenge'
Telstar have appointed Henk Brugge as their new head coach in the Eredivisie. The 48-year-old manager, who built his experience as an assistant at sc Heerenveen and as a youth coach at the KNVB, Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle, must continue the successful path set by his predecessor Anthony Correia and keep Telstar in the Eredivisie next season as well.
Brugge fits the DNA of Telstar
Helping players grow while delivering entertaining football for the supporters — that is the essence of Telstar's DNA. With that benchmark in mind, technical manager Peter Hofstede set out to find a new head coach. After an extensive process in which multiple candidates were interviewed, the choice fell on Henk Brugge. 'We believe Henk is the best fit for our DNA,' Hofstede stated at the official unveiling of the 48-year-old coach.
Big shoes to fill after Correia's departure
Brugge is inheriting an impressive legacy in Velsen-Zuid. His predecessor Anthony Correia wrote a remarkable fairy tale over the past two seasons: Telstar played attractive football, beat league champions PSV twice and ultimately retained their Eredivisie status — though the confirmation only came on the very last matchday. When Correia subsequently made the move to FC Utrecht, he left behind a success story that the whole of the Netherlands had watched with admiration. Brugge acknowledges that wholeheartedly: 'What Telstar achieved with Correia over the past two years is fantastic. It is the kind of football for which I have enormous respect.'
First head coaching role in the Eredivisie
For Brugge, the appointment at Telstar marks his baptism of fire as a head coach at the highest level. The three years prior to this he served as an assistant at sc Heerenveen, following earlier years as a youth coach at the KNVB, Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle. The Emmeloord native also spent many years teaching in special education — a background that has helped shape his down-to-earth character. He is under no illusions about the task that awaits him: 'I am realistic enough about what will be asked of me. And of the squad. But I won't run away from it — this club is giving me the opportunity to become a head coach in the Eredivisie.' Hofstede added with confidence that the fact sc Heerenveen regret losing Brugge speaks volumes about his qualities.
Bigger budgets and ambition for the new season
Telstar presents itself as a small-scale, family-oriented club where personal development is central — for players, staff and everyone within the organisation. Brugge sees Telstar as a stage on which everyone can showcase themselves. Budgets have now increased significantly, giving the club a stronger position in the transfer market. Hofstede, Brugge and former club captain Mitch Apau — now active as head of scouting — will work together to assemble a squad capable of competing in the Eredivisie. 'Players have seen how we performed in the Eredivisie. We believe it is a great challenge for them to help make the Telstar fairy tale even more complete,' said Hofstede.
