Henk Brugge has been appointed as the new head coach of Telstar. The Emmeloord native is proud to take charge of a professional club for the first time and is grateful to Telstar for the opportunity, though he admits he still needs to get used to his new title.
First head coaching role in professional football
Henk Brugge from Emmeloord has taken a major step in his coaching career. The trainer has been appointed as head coach of Telstar and can barely contain his excitement. 'It's incredibly special, and I'm obviously hugely grateful to Telstar for giving me this opportunity,' said Brugge. It marks the first time he has been the man in overall charge at a professional football club. Nevertheless, he expects to settle into his new role quickly: 'By the time we get started, it needs to feel normal.'
Interim spell at SC Heerenveen fuelled his ambitions
Brugge has already had a taste of life as a head coach. At SC Heerenveen, he took charge for three matches as interim manager after then-head coach Robin van Persie departed for Feyenoord. That brief spell strengthened his conviction that he wanted to work as the man in charge. 'It felt really good at the time,' said Brugge. However, he still lacked the required qualifications back then. Now that the issue of his coaching diplomas has been resolved, his appointment at Telstar comes at exactly the right moment.
Family comes first: an hour and a half on the road from the polder each day
The move to Telstar does bring a practical change compared to his time at SC Heerenveen. Where the commute used to take him half an hour, Brugge now faces an hour and a half in the car each way. Even so, he has made a conscious decision to stay in Emmeloord and make the daily journey. His reasoning is personal: his family plays a decisive role in that choice. 'They share in my dream, but not at any cost,' said the new Telstar head coach, who wants his family to remain in the surroundings they know and love.
