Historic double for PSV: women's team claim maiden league title
PSV's women have won the Eredivisie title for the first time in the club's history. A convincing 2-0 victory over ADO Den Haag in the penultimate round of the season put the championship beyond the reach of their rivals. With PSV's men having already clinched the title earlier this season, the Eindhoven club has now achieved a historic double.
First ever league title for PSV women
PSV's women have made history. In the penultimate round of the women's Eredivisie, they beat ADO Den Haag 2-0 at home — enough to seal the title definitively. With no side able to overhaul them, a long-cherished dream has finally become reality for the club from Eindhoven. It is not the first time PSV have come close. Last season, the title seemed within their grasp, only for FC Twente to snatch the trophy on the final day on goal difference. And in the 2019/2020 season, PSV sat unbeaten at the top of the table until the competition was suspended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, they left no room for doubt.
Early Xhemaili goal and substitute Kalma seal the win
ADO Den Haag, currently tenth in the table, had shown surprising fighting spirit in recent weeks, picking up thirteen points from their last five matches. Yet none of that could unsettle PSV. As early as the third minute the hosts took the lead: Renate Jansen delivered the cross and Riola Xhemaili brought the ball under control before finishing crisply. After the break, PSV remained calm and composed. A quarter of an hour from time, substitute Fenna Kalma — a two-time title winner with FC Twente — made it 2-0. She was sharp when the ADO goalkeeper spilled the ball and finished ruthlessly. Head coach Roeland ten Berge, who will leave the club at the end of the season, crowned his farewell campaign with gold.
Historic double — only AZ had done it before
The women's title completes a remarkable achievement for PSV. Earlier this season, the men's team had already been crowned champions of the Netherlands. That makes PSV only the second club in Dutch football history to win the league title with both the men's and women's teams in the same season. Only AZ had previously managed the feat, back in 2008/2009.
Battle for second place still wide open
While PSV were popping the champagne, the fight for second and third place in the women's Eredivisie is very much alive. Ajax currently hold the best cards for the runners-up spot after a 3-1 home win over AZ, keeping FC Twente and Feyenoord — both also victorious — at bay. The second-placed side will join PSV in the Champions League qualifying rounds next season, while third place earns a spot in the Europa Cup preliminaries. For ADO Den Haag, the defeat could have serious consequences. Finishing tenth may mean relegation at the end of the season. De Graafschap are hoping to earn promotion from the first division, but must first get past Jong Ajax, who as a reserve side are not permitted to compete in the Eredivisie.
Cup final offers chance at the double
PSV's women are not done yet. Next week brings the cup final, in which the Eindhoven side will face FC Twente. Victory would mean PSV have won both the league and the cup in a single season — the double. After a historic title, even more glory now beckons.
