Willem II Celebration in Tilburg: Massive Turnout at De Heuvel Following Promotion to the Eredivisie
Tilburg is in a festive mood as Willem II prepared for a grand celebration following their promotion to the Eredivisie. Supporters flocked to De Heuvel en masse to honour the players, despite the heat of the day.
Packed Sections and a Club Appeal to Supporters
The turnout at De Heuvel in Tilburg exceeded all expectations. The first section filled up so quickly that the club, through a spokesperson, asked supporters to arrive later. Supporters' groups heeded the call. The second section still had plenty of space available. Those who could not find a spot on the square had the option of heading to the bars on the Korte Heuvel, where the celebration could be followed on screens.
Early Birds and the Best Spot on the Square
Sjaak and Frans left nothing to chance, arriving early on Sunday afternoon to scout out a good position. It turned out to be easier than expected: the two had secured an excellent spot at the disabled viewing area, right next to the stage — arguably the best vantage point on the entire square.
Can Collector Teun Turns It Into a Business Day
It was not only Tilburg's hospitality industry that cashed in on the festive atmosphere surrounding Willem II's promotion celebrations. Well-known Tilburg can collector Teun van Maurik also seized his opportunity. Since supporters were not allowed to bring cans to De Heuvel, he positioned himself with his mobility scooter and a large bag right in front of the entrance. It proved to be a shrewd move: by the end of the afternoon, he had collected around 300 euros' worth of deposit cans. Van Maurik is a familiar face in Tilburg, known for his cheerful presence around the city. His day had nearly gone very differently: during King's Night, his mobility scooter was stolen, which hit him hard. However, following the arrest of a suspect, he had since obtained a new scooter and was able to resume his activities.
