Joelinton fires Newcastle United to victory over Southampton despite being reduced to ten men
Newcastle United have beaten Southampton 1-0 in the Premier League. A goal from Joelinton just before half-time proved enough for the home side, who played the majority of the match with ten men following a red card for Fabian Schär.
Joelinton's first-half strike proves sufficient
At St. James' Park, a single goal was all Newcastle United needed to see off Southampton: 1-0. Joelinton headed the ball into the net in first-half stoppage time, with Alexander Isak providing the assist. It was a crucial goal, as Newcastle were already down to ten men at that point following the early dismissal of defender Fabian Schär.
Schär sent off after incident with Brereton Diaz
Newcastle United suffered a significant setback as early as the 28th minute, when Fabian Schär was shown a straight red card for a headbutt aimed at Southampton's Ben Brereton Diaz. Manager Eddie Howe reflected on the decision afterwards with mixed feelings: 'The contact is minimal, and it is a harsh red card, but it is something we learn from.' The fact that Newcastle managed to claim all three points despite the numerical disadvantage makes the victory all the more remarkable.

For Newcastle United, the coming weeks see them face an away trip to AFC Bournemouth on 25 August, a home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on 1 September, and an away match at Wolverhampton Wanderers on 15 September.
