Las Palmas take on Real Madrid at the Gran Canaria stadium on Thursday 29 August at 20:30 (GMT+1), following a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to newcomers Leganés. The Canary Islanders are hoping to spring a surprise against Los Blancos, who arrive in excellent form after a 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid.
Real Madrid roll on after flawless win over Valladolid
Real Madrid made an impressive start to the weekend by brushing aside Real Valladolid 3-0, recording their first league victory of the season. Federico Valverde opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a fine finish, before Brahim Díaz made it 2-0 in the 88th minute. The final word went to substitute Endrick, who netted his first goal in a Real Madrid shirt in the 96th minute. Riding that wave of confidence, Carlo Ancelotti's side are now targeting back-to-back wins, backed by an unbeaten run of nine matches. Training sessions during the week wrapped up with small-sided games, reflecting the positive atmosphere within the squad. In attack, Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and Kylian Mbappé are expected to feature in Ancelotti's 4-3-3 system. Left-back Ferland Mendy is available again after serving the suspension he received following a red card on the opening matchday. David Alaba, Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham remain sidelined until early September.
Las Palmas struggle for home form and remain winless to start the season
After drawing on the opening matchday, Las Palmas endured a painful second round of fixtures, losing 2-1 at home to newcomers Leganés. Nevertheless, Las Palmas are determined to fight for all three points against Real Madrid too, as Álex Suárez made clear: 'Real Madrid are one of the best in the world, but it's eleven against eleven. Once the referee blows his whistle, we go for the win.' The statistics, however, make for grim reading: Las Palmas have won none of their last eight La Liga home matches, with four draws and four defeats. Should they draw against Real Madrid as well, it would be the first time since March 1978 that the club have registered four consecutive home draws in Spain's top flight. Manager Carrión is expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Oli McBurnie leading the attack.
