Laszlo Benes leaves 1. FC Union Berlin permanently for KAA Gent
Laszlo Benes has completed a permanent departure from 1. FC Union Berlin, signing a contract with Belgian top-flight club KAA Gent until the summer of 2030. The 28-year-old Slovak midfielder caught the eye last season during a loan spell at Kayserispor in the Turkish Süper Lig.
From Berlin to Gent via Turkey
After one season at Union Berlin and a successful loan spell at Kayserispor, Laszlo Benes has found his next destination. The 28-year-old Slovak midfielder joins KAA Gent on a long-term deal running until the summer of 2030. The Bundesliga club confirmed the transfer themselves. Benes had arrived at the Alte Försterei in the summer of 2024 but never truly nailed down a starting spot at the Berlin club. In his only season at Union Berlin, he made 25 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and one assist.
Impressive numbers at Kayserispor
In search of regular playing time, Benes was sent out on loan to Turkish Süper Lig side Kayserispor. There, the 42-cap international quickly established himself as a midfield regular. In 32 league matches he scored seven goals and provided two assists — numbers that significantly boosted his stock on the transfer market. The player himself reflected briefly on his time in the German capital, saying he was grateful for his period at Union despite its brevity. He had felt at home from day one and experienced special moments there. Now he is looking forward to his new challenge at Gent.
