Laszlo Benes leaves 1. FC Union Berlin for KAA Gent
Laszlo Benes has permanently departed 1. FC Union Berlin. The 28-year-old Slovakian midfielder has signed a contract with Belgian top-flight club KAA Gent, running until the summer of 2030.
From the Alte Försterei to Gent
Laszlo Benes will not be returning to 1. FC Union Berlin after a loan spell at Turkish club Kayserispor. The Bundesliga side confirmed that the 28-year-old midfielder has left on a permanent basis to continue his career at KAA Gent, where he has put pen to paper on a long-term deal through the summer of 2030.
Limited role at Union, strong loan spell in Turkey
Benes joined Union Berlin in the summer of 2024, but managed just 25 official appearances during his sole season at the Alte Försterei, contributing two goals and one assist. The 42-cap Slovakian international moved to Kayserispor on loan in search of regular playing time — and the move paid off handsomely. He quickly established himself as a starter in central midfield in the Süper Lig, featuring in 32 matches, scoring seven goals and adding two assists.
Benes bids farewell to Union
The midfielder reflected warmly on his time in the German capital. "I'm grateful for my period at Union. Even though it was brief, I felt at home from day one and experienced some special moments. Now I'm really looking forward to the new challenge in Gent," said Benes.
