Chelsea level through an unfortunate own goal
Yet Chelsea regrouped more quickly than expected. After 35 minutes, Enzo Fernández attempted to pick out Wesley Fofana with a low free-kick along the ground. The ball missed its intended target but rolled into the Liverpool net regardless to make it 1-1. A fortunate way to equalise, but Chelsea gratefully accepted the gift.
Offside calls rule out potential winners
After the break, both sides pushed for a winner, but the VAR intervened to keep the scoreline level. Chelsea thought they had taken the lead through Cole Palmer, only for the goal to be disallowed after Marc Cucurella was adjudged to have been narrowly offside in the build-up. At the other end, a strike from Curtis Jones was immediately ruled out for offside by Gakpo. Despite a determined late assault from Chelsea, neither side could produce a valid winning goal and the match ended 1-1.
Implications for the table
The draw leaves Liverpool's hold on fifth place in the Premier League — which carries a direct Champions League berth — far from secure. Chelsea, meanwhile, finally ended a dismal run of six consecutive league defeats by claiming their first point since early March.
