Aston Villa enjoyed a fairytale season last year, finishing in a European position and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Lopetegui has nothing but respect for the visitors: 'Aston Villa were one of the best teams in the Premier League last season and they are now playing in the Champions League. I think they have strengthened themselves even further this summer, so we must be ready for an enormous challenge,' said the West Ham manager.
West Ham bolsters squad with three high-profile signings
In a bid to turn the tide, West Ham United used the transfer window to make substantial investments. Defender Max Kilman was recruited from Wolverhampton Wanderers for €47 million, while right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka made the move from Manchester United for €17.6 million. The most eye-catching addition, however, is Niclas Füllkrug, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund for €27 million. The German striker impressed at Euro 2024 this summer and is expected to lead the attack on Saturday in a 4-2-3-1 formation. One setback is the absence of Edson Álvarez, who is injured and will miss the opening fixture.
Historical statistics paint a contrasting picture
The build-up to the new season has not been without its concerns. Across five pre-season fixtures, West Ham managed just one win in regular time — hardly the ideal preparation for a competitive opener. Nevertheless, the head-to-head record offers some encouragement: the Hammers have lost just once in their last twelve meetings with Aston Villa, recording six wins and five draws. The statistics on opening days, however, tell a less favourable story for the hosts. In their last eight season openers, West Ham have claimed maximum points on just one occasion, alongside one draw and as many as six defeats.
Aston Villa invest £129.5 million and travel to London full of ambition
Aston Villa have also been busy in the transfer market, spending a total of £129.5 million on new players. Samuel Iling-Junior made the move from Juventus for €14 million, midfielder Amadou Onana arrived from Everton for €59.35 million, and Ian Maatsen joined from Chelsea for €45 million. Manager Unai Emery is counting on a flying start from his new recruits. Yet the visitors also face some statistically unwelcome reading: Villa have gone nine away matches without a win against West Ham, a run that includes five draws and four defeats. Furthermore, the club have lost each of their last three season openers, conceding at least ten goals in total across those fixtures. Striker Ollie Watkins, who scored nineteen goals in last season's Premier League campaign to finish joint fourth in the scoring charts alongside Phil Foden of Manchester City and Dominic Solanke, now at Tottenham Hotspur, is again expected to lead the line in an anticipated 4-2-3-1 formation. Long-term absentees Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings will both miss the opening fixture.
