Lorenzo Colombo and Emmanuel Gyasi hand Empoli victory over Roma
Empoli claimed a Serie A win away at Roma on Sunday, beating the hosts 1-2 at the Stadio Olimpico. Emmanuel Gyasi and Lorenzo Colombo were on target for the Tuscans, while Eldor Shomurodov pulled one back for the home side.
Gyasi breaks the deadlock in first-half stoppage time
It was an eventful first half in Rome, settled only in added time. Emmanuel Gyasi put Empoli ahead with a goal assisted by Lorenzo Colombo. The strike came in first-half stoppage time and gave the visitors an excellent platform heading into the second period.
Colombo doubles the lead after the break
Empoli struck again in the 61st minute, this time through Lorenzo Colombo himself, who extended the lead to 0-2. The striker had now been involved in both of his side's goals, first as provider and then as scorer.
Shomurodov gives Roma brief hope
Roma refused to go down without a fight. In the 80th minute, Eldor Shomurodov reduced the deficit to 1-2, with Tommaso Baldanzi registering the assist. The hosts were unable to find an equaliser, however, and Empoli held on to take all three points back to Tuscany.
Standings and looking ahead
The victory gives Empoli their first win of the season and moves them onto four points after two matches. Roma, also two games in, sit on just one point. In the coming weeks, Roma face Juventus away on 1 September, Genoa away on 15 September, and Udinese at home on 22 September. Empoli travel to Bologna on 31 August, then host Juventus on 15 September before rounding off the month with an away fixture at Cagliari on 22 September.
