Kübler makes the difference
SC Freiburg refused to be rattled and hit back in the 26th minute. Lukas Kübler drew the sides level — remarkably, with an assist from the same Junior Adamu who had set up Stuttgart's opener. After the break, Freiburg took complete control. In the 54th minute, Ritsu Doan put the hosts ahead thanks to an assist from Vincenzo Grifo. Seven minutes later, the lead was extended: Kübler finished for the second time, again set up by Grifo, to seal the 3-1 final score. The German was the undisputed man of the match with his brace, while Grifo left his mark on the second half with two assists.
Outlook: demanding fixtures ahead for both clubs
SC Freiburg face a challenging run of fixtures. On 1 September they travel to FC Bayern München, on 14 September they host a home match, and on 21 September they face an away trip to Heidenheim. VfB Stuttgart welcome FSV Mainz 05 at home on 31 August, travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach on 14 September, and then host Borussia Dortmund on 22 September.
