Manchester City appoint Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola's successor
Manchester City have officially appointed Enzo Maresca as their new head coach, succeeding Pep Guardiola. The Italian has signed a three-year deal with the English giants, returning to familiar surroundings in Manchester.
Long wait for confirmation
More than a month after Pep Guardiola announced his departure from the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City finally brought clarity on Monday regarding his successor. Enzo Maresca's name had been circulating as the frontrunner for some time, yet an official confirmation was notably slow in coming.
Chelsea compensation clause cause of delay
The reason for the hold-up lay with Maresca's previous employer. The Italian was still formally under contract at Chelsea, where he left his role as head coach earlier this calendar year. Manchester City were required to buy out that contract before the deal could be finalised. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the compensation paid to Chelsea amounts to approximately €19.7 million. With that payment completed, Maresca was duly unveiled as the new manager of the Citizens.
Three-year deal for title-winning coach
Maresca has put pen to paper on a three-season contract. The 44-year-old built his reputation as a head coach in his own right at Parma, Leicester City and Chelsea. At Leicester, he crowned his work in 2024 by winning the Championship title, guiding the club back into the Premier League.
Return to familiar territory
For Maresca, the move to Manchester City is more than just another new challenge — it is a return to an environment he knows well. He was previously active in Manchester as head coach of the Under-23 side and as an assistant to Guardiola with the first team. That background resonates in his first reaction through the club's official channels: "Manchester City is a club I know very well and the chance to manage this team is a fantastic opportunity for me. City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation.
