Manchester City were the superior side from the first whistle at Stamford Bridge. After just eighteen minutes, Erling Haaland found the net with an assist from Bernardo Silva. The visitors took an early lead into the break and gave Chelsea little opportunity to work their way into the game.
Kovačić wraps it up in the closing stages
With six minutes remaining, Mateo Kovačić made it 0-2, firmly closing the door on Chelsea. The home side failed to score throughout the entire match, as Manchester City claimed an impressive and well-deserved away victory in the Premier League.
Maresca disappointed but not discouraged after Premier League debut
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca gave an honest assessment of the defeat afterwards. In his view, the key difference came down to finishing. 'The performance was there, but we didn't take our chances. The big difference was probably the play in the box. I'm fairly satisfied with the performance,' said Maresca, whose Premier League campaign with Chelsea got off to a losing start. The Italian also made clear that his side are eager to bounce back quickly: 'We don't like losing. We just have to keep going.'
Busy schedule ahead for both clubs
Chelsea continue their league campaign with home fixtures against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 25 August and Crystal Palace on 1 September, followed by an away trip to AFC Bournemouth on 14 September. Manchester City face Ipswich Town on 24 August, take on West Ham United on 31 August, and then welcome Brentford to their own ground on 14 September.
