Marcel Groninger joins Telstar as assistant coach

Marcel Groninger has found a new role: the experienced assistant coach is set to join Telstar, where he will become the right-hand man of head coach Henk Brugge. The former assistant of Erwin van de Looi and Dick Lukkien has signed a two-year contract at Sportpark Schoonenberg in Velsen-Zuid.
Groninger strengthens Telstar's coaching staff
Telstar have further shaped their coaching setup. Marcel Groninger will join as assistant coach of the Eredivisie club from Velsen-Zuid, the club has announced. He will be the permanent partner of head coach Henk Brugge, who recently made the switch from sc Heerenveen to the Kennemerstreek outfit. Groninger has put pen to paper on a two-year deal.
Wealth of experience as an assistant
Groninger is no stranger to Dutch football. The Groningen native has built an extensive track record as an assistant coach, including two separate spells at FC Groningen. Between 2019 and 2023, he was also part of the Jong Oranje coaching staff, serving as right-hand man to national team coach Erwin van de Looi. His most recent post was at Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana, where he once again teamed up with Van de Looi. That adventure came to a premature end, however: after just five matches, both coaches were dismissed due to disappointing results.
Telstar seeking continuity after surprise season
The arrival of Groninger is part of the broader construction of a new coaching staff at Telstar. The club survived in the Eredivisie last season in impressive fashion as a newly promoted side, but subsequently saw head coach Anthony Correia depart for FC Utrecht. With Henk Brugge as the new man in charge and Groninger alongside him, Telstar are looking to maintain that momentum.
