NAC Breda relegated from the Eredivisie: match against SC Heerenveen abandoned after repeated fireworks incidents
NAC Breda have been relegated from the Eredivisie. Despite leading 2-0 against SC Heerenveen, Carl Hoefkens's side were unable to secure their top-flight survival as rivals Telstar and FC Volendam did enough to stay up. The match at the Rat Verlegh Stadion was ultimately abandoned shortly before the final whistle after supporters repeatedly threw fireworks onto the pitch.

Even before kick-off, a charged atmosphere had already descended on NAC Breda's home ground. At the main entrance, supporters held up banners demanding the departure of technical director Peter Maas. The presence of police vans, riot police and mounted officers made it clear that authorities were prepared for a range of scenarios. Inside the stadium, fans also made their feelings known with banners directed at the club's hierarchy and technical staff. From 'Data according to NAC: strong performance! Data according to us: plain and simple relegation' to 'Hoefkens: up to the line and no further' — the discontent among the Breda faithful was there for all to see on Sunday afternoon. A significant portion of the supporter base is calling for a complete overhaul, from the playing squad and technical staff right through to the boardroom.
NAC push Heerenveen back, Kemper strikes on the stroke of half-time
On the pitch, NAC Breda refused to be distracted and produced a decent footballing performance. Moussa Soumano threatened with a header and Kamal Sowah made his presence felt after quarter of an hour with a powerful shot. SC Heerenveen were pushed further and further back and, aside from one clear-cut chance, rarely posed a threat. The Frisians also came off second best in terms of work rate. The reward arrived after 36 minutes when defender Boy Kemper fired in a stunning effort to make it 1-0.
Heerenveen grow into the game, goalkeeper Bielica saves NAC
After the break, NAC were initially unable to sustain the high tempo of the first half, allowing SC Heerenveen to become increasingly threatening. Goalkeeper Daniel Bielica was called into action when his own defender Rio Hillen nearly caught him off guard with a lob. Shortly afterwards, the Polish keeper produced a fine save to tip a header from Luca Oyen onto the crossbar.
Flares, a disallowed equaliser and a penalty
The match then took on a frenetic pace. Referee Sander van der Eijk temporarily suspended play after supporters threw flares onto the pitch. Upon resumption, Dylan Vente appeared to level the scores, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. At the other end, the referee pointed to the spot, and Boy Kemper stepped up to convert again: 2-0 to NAC Breda.
Match abandoned and relegation confirmed
In the closing minutes, the fireworks flared up once more. Flares landed on the pitch again, leaving referee Van der Eijk with no choice but to abandon the match for good. At the same time, it became clear that results elsewhere — with Telstar and FC Volendam both doing enough — meant there was no way back for NAC Breda. The club's relegation from the Eredivisie is now confirmed.
