NAC Breda have been definitively relegated from the Eredivisie. Rivals Telstar and FC Volendam both picked up points on Saturday, condemning the Brabant club to a seventeenth-place finish and a return to the Eerste Divisie after two seasons in the top flight. NAC's home match against sc Heerenveen, which stood at 2-0 in favour of the hosts, was permanently abandoned after supporters threw fireworks onto the pitch on multiple occasions.
Hopes crushed by rivals' results
NAC Breda needed a specific set of results on Saturday to survive: win at home and hope that both Telstar and FC Volendam would slip up. Neither happened. FC Volendam drew 1-1 with Excelsior in Rotterdam, while Telstar impressed with a commanding 3-0 victory over already-relegated Heracles Almelo. Those results sealed the fate of the Breda club: a seventeenth-place finish and a forced return to the Eerste Divisie after two seasons at the highest level.

The match in Breda between NAC and sc Heerenveen was anything but straightforward. With the score at 2-0 to NAC, home supporters threw fireworks onto the pitch on multiple occasions. After a first brief interruption, a second incident led to the permanent abandonment of the match.
Excelsior secure safety with draw
At Woudestein in Rotterdam, the draw between Excelsior and FC Volendam brought plenty of clarity. Volendam took the lead after just two minutes through Pauwels, who cut inside before finding the near corner. Excelsior levelled just before half-time via an own goal from Yah, after Meissen had already gone close earlier. After the break, the Rotterdam side kept the ball patiently — a point was all they needed. Excelsior finish fourteenth or fifteenth as a result, with the final positions between Volendam and Telstar still to be determined in the last round of fixtures. FC Volendam must beat Telstar at home next week to avoid the relegation play-offs.
Telstar win convincingly in Velsen-Zuid
Telstar held the upper hand against Heracles Almelo in the first half, but clear-cut chances were hard to come by. Van Duijn posed a threat for the hosts on one occasion, while Van Gilst had an opportunity for Heracles. The second half changed dramatically following the introduction of Kay Tejan. Telstar scored three times in the space of seven minutes: Guus Offerhaus tapped in a rebound, Tyrese Noslin slid the ball home, and Jeff Hardeveld headed in the third. Late on, Heracles player Luka Kulenovic was shown a red card. Ahead of their meeting with Volendam next week, Telstar need only a draw to avoid the play-offs.
Fortuna Sittard and PEC Zwolle also safe after head-to-head clash
Fortuna Sittard and PEC Zwolle could theoretically still have found themselves in trouble, but the other results meant that was never going to materialise. Fortuna won their head-to-head encounter 3-2 regardless, giving the Limburg club extra breathing room. Lance Duijvestijn opened the scoring after a flick from Kaj Sierhuis. After the break, Yassin Oukili bundled in a second, before Sierhuis produced a stunning half-volley from outside the box to make it 3-0. PEC fought back: Gabriel Reiziger chipped the ball over the goalkeeper following a pass from Monteiro, and Zico Buurmeester headed in to make it 3-2. Both clubs will play in the Eredivisie next season.
