Parma beat AC Milan 2-1 in Serie A: goals from Man and Cancellieri decide the contest
Parma defeated AC Milan at home, winning 2-1. At the Stadio Ennio Tardini, Dennis Man opened the scoring early, before Christian Pulisic equalised for Milan. It was Matteo Cancellieri who struck in the 77th minute to seal the win and earn Parma three precious points.
Early conceded goal sets the tone for Milan
The match began disastrously for AC Milan. As early as the second minute, Parma broke the deadlock through Dennis Man, who was set up by Emanuele Valeri. The early deficit forced Milan into an immediate response, but the side managed by coach Paulo Fonseca visibly struggled to get a grip on the game.
Pulisic draws Milan level, but Cancellieri strikes again
In the 66th minute, Milan appeared to be back in the contest. Christian Pulisic scored the equaliser after an assist from Rafael Leão, making it 1-1. The relief among the Milanese, however, was short-lived. In the 77th minute, Matteo Cancellieri, assisted by Pontus Almqvist, delivered the decisive 2-1. Parma held on and took all three points.
Fonseca pulls no punches in his assessment after defensive nightmare
After the final whistle, Milan coach Paulo Fonseca was scathing in his analysis. 'Overall, our defensive performance was dreadful; it is impossible to win when you defend like that. We did not defend as a team, and individually it was wrong too: we lost our duels, were always too late to press, constantly gave away space and made the wrong choices in our man-marking,' said Fonseca.
Standings and outlook: Milan in troubled waters
The defeat leaves AC Milan with just one point after two matchdays. Parma claimed their first victory of the season with this win and sit on four points. Both clubs face demanding fixtures in the weeks ahead. Parma host Napoli on 31 August, travel to Udinese on 15 September and visit Lecce on 22 September. Milan face Lazio on 31 August, host Venezia on 15 September and make the trip to city rivals Internazionale on 22 September.
