PSV crown season with victory over Ajax in final Eredivisie Cup
Three weeks after clinching the league title, PSV have also won the Eredivisie Cup. In the final in Eindhoven, Ajax were beaten 3-0. It was simultaneously the very last edition of this second cup competition in Dutch women's football, which was held for the first time in 2019.
Ripa, Kalma and Folkertsma decide the final
With a convincing 3-0 victory over Ajax, PSV's women wrote their names into the history books as winners of the definitively final Eredivisie Cup. Chimera Ripa, Fenna Kalma and Sisca Folkertsma each got on the scoresheet, never allowing Ajax a foothold in the match. PSV had secured their place in the final by eliminating FC Twente in the semi-finals, while Ajax had earlier beaten Feyenoord.
The close of a brief tournament existence
The Eredivisie Cup, a competition first played in 2019, enjoyed an eventful but short existence. Ajax won the 2021 edition, but it was PSV who proved the most dominant side in recent years. Last season the Eindhoven club already lifted the trophy by beating FC Twente on penalties in the final. Twente were, with four titles from six editions, by far the most successful club in the competition. This season, however, the club from Twente had to settle for the KNVB Cup, which they won after a final victory over that same PSV.
Format: league champions and period winners
The Eredivisie Cup was specifically designed as a second cup competition within Dutch women's football. Participants were the league champions and the winners of the competition periods. With PSV as reigning champions and now also winners of the final edition, the tournament closes with a double stamp from the Eindhoven club on this chapter in the history of women's football in the Netherlands.
