PSV strengthens top spot with demolition job at Almere City: 1-7
PSV have further cemented their lead at the top of the Eredivisie with a crushing 1-7 victory away at Almere City. The Eindhoven side extend their advantage over second-placed FC Utrecht to two points, while Almere City remain rooted to the foot of the table in eighteenth place.
Quick out of the blocks
PSV wasted no time making their presence felt in Almere. As early as the tenth minute, Guus Til opened the scoring with an assist from Noa Lang. Five minutes later, Luuk de Jong doubled the lead, this time set up by Joey Veerman. The visitors from Eindhoven took a firm grip on the match from the very start.
Almere City offer brief resistance
After the break, Almere City briefly threatened to get back into the game. In the 57th minute, Kornelius Hansen pulled one back, with Jochem Ritmeester van de Kamp providing the assist. The home side's hopes, however, were short-lived.
PSV blow the game wide open
PSV immediately stepped up a gear after conceding. Couhaib Driouech made it 1-3 in the 65th minute, finishing from an assist by Hirving Lozano. Six minutes later, Malik Tillman extended the lead further, once again set up by Joey Veerman. In the 78th minute an own goal added to the tally, before Hirving Lozano got on the scoresheet himself in the 83rd minute, assisted by Ryan Flamingo. Ricardo Pepi then put the cherry on top seven minutes later, completing the 1-7 rout with help from Couhaib Driouech.
Looking ahead: busy schedule for both clubs
Almere City, who sit bottom of the Eredivisie, face FC Groningen on 31 August, followed by fixtures against Heracles Almelo on 15 September and a home clash with FC Twente on 22 September. PSV continue their title challenge on 1 September with an away trip to Go Ahead Eagles, before hosting NEC on 14 September and travelling to Fortuna Sittard on 22 September.
