PSV Vrouwen claim Eredivisie Cup to cap historic title-winning season

PSV Vrouwen have won the Eredivisie Cup, beating Ajax 3-0 in the final. The Eindhoven side had already made history this season by claiming their first ever league title, but saw the double slip away after a penalty shootout defeat to FC Twente in the KNVB Beker final. With the Eredivisie Cup — a separate cup competition running alongside the KNVB Beker — PSV still finish the season with two trophies.

Historic league title as the foundation

On 8 May, PSV Vrouwen wrote their name into the club's history books for good. In front of a sold-out TenCate Stadion De Herdgang, the side defeated ADO Den Haag 2-0 to clinch their first ever league title. The celebrations were euphoric, though one small detail did not go unnoticed: captain Laura Strik had to admit with a smile at the town hall reception that the championship trophy had hit the ground. 'It doesn't have to be perfect,' she said with a laugh, referring to its slightly bent rim.

Double falls apart in penalty shootout against FC Twente

Following the league title, PSV Vrouwen set their sights on a historic double with great ambition. In the KNVB Beker final, however, FC Twente proved to be the stronger side: the Eindhoven outfit lost to the Tukkers on penalties, and with it their dream of a perfect golden close to the season went up in smoke.

Eredivisie Cup provides the perfect finale

The Eredivisie Cup, an additional cup competition in Dutch women's football played alongside the KNVB Beker, gave PSV the chance to end the season with a second piece of silverware after all. They took that chance emphatically: a convincing 3-0 victory over Ajax sealed the trophy. And so PSV Vrouwen's season draws to a close with a slightly dented championship shield and a gleaming cup as a well-deserved addition to the trophy cabinet.
