Real Betis return to the Champions League after 21 years as Spain's fifth club
Real Betis are heading back to the Champions League after a 21-year absence. The Andalusian club secured the fifth and final Spanish spot with a 2-1 victory over Elche, while rivals Celta de Vigo simultaneously lost to Levante (2-3).

Real Betis have secured the fifth and final Spanish berth in the Champions League. Following a 2-1 win over Elche and Celta de Vigo's concurrent defeat against Levante (2-3), the Seville club can no longer be caught in La Liga. Next season, Betis will join newly crowned champions Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal and Atlético Madrid in representing Spain in Europe's most prestigious club competition. La Liga's allocation of five spots is a reward for the strong performances of Spanish clubs across all three European competitions last season.
Red card and two long-range strikes settle the contest
The match against Elche was not decided until the second half. The game followed a remarkable course: Juan Hernández opened the scoring from around twenty metres, before Héctor Fort levelled with a fortunate goal just before the break. After Elche defender Léo Pétrot was shown a red card, Betis made the most of their numerical advantage. Pablo Fornals proved the match-winner, curling the ball beautifully into the top corner from twenty metres. Former Eredivisie players Sofyan Amrabat and Antony both started for the Andalusians.
From a European final to the Champions League: the rise under Pellegrini
Real Betis's previous and only Champions League appearance dates back to 2005, when the club finished third in a group alongside Liverpool and Chelsea before eliminating AZ in the UEFA Cup. That historic season was followed by decades of sporting and administrative decline, including two relegations to the second tier of Spanish football. Under Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini, however, Betis have rebuilt in recent years and established themselves as a consistent upper-mid-table force in La Liga. Last season the club reached a European final for the first time, but were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea in the Conference League showpiece.
Elche's painful evening leaves them far from safe
For Elche, the closing stages of the season are proving anything but comfortable. Despite an impressive first half of the campaign in which Eder Sarabia's side were dreaming of European football, the club now find themselves dangerously close to the relegation zone. Bottom side Real Oviedo are already condemned to the drop, while the seven teams directly above them are separated by just three points, making the battle for survival extraordinarily tight.
