Telstar secure Eredivisie survival thanks to goalkeeper Koeman's decisive penalty, FC Volendam head to play-offs

Telstar secured their place in the Eredivisie by winning the 'Vissersderby' at FC Volendam 2-1. The unlikely match-winner was goalkeeper Ronald Koeman junior, who coolly converted a penalty in the 89th minute to score the decisive goal. FC Volendam, sitting in 16th place, must now fight for their survival against Willem II in the promotion/relegation play-offs.
Koeman Jr. makes history in the Vissersderby
A goalkeeper who scores – it's a rare sight, but in the all-important Vissersderby, Ronald Koeman junior delivered exactly that. Telstar's shot-stopper stepped up to the penalty spot in the 89th minute and slotted home with ice-cold composure, sealing a 2-1 victory at FC Volendam. Telstar, who returned to the Eredivisie last year after a 47-year absence, will compete at the top flight again next season. The win even lifted them to 14th place in the final standings.
Volendam fly out of the blocks but surrender their lead
It looked, initially, as though the evening belonged to FC Volendam. After just two minutes, Anthony Descotte opened the scoring following poor defending from Telstar: 1-0. The hosts had exactly what they needed and promptly dropped deep, time-wasting and waiting to hit on the counter. Telstar, who had gone into the match with a two-point cushion in the table, were forced to take the game to their opponents but appeared rattled by the early setback. Manager Anthony Correia watched his side grind nervously through a tense first half, until captain Danny Bakker came to the rescue just before the break. Bakker headed in a free kick from Jeff Hardeveld, just ahead of Volendam goalkeeper Roy Steur: 1-1.
Veerman and Mühren cannot save Volendam
After the interval, FC Volendam had no choice but to go all-out. Manager Rick Kruys made an early second-half intervention by introducing Henk Veerman, followed by substitute Robert Mühren, who is retiring from professional football at the end of this season. Had Volendam won, it could have been his final appearance as a professional. The best chance for the home side fell to Descotte again, but his shot on the turn was kept out by goalkeeper Koeman. Telstar also threatened through Soufiane Hetli, but the decisive moment came from the penalty spot. Volendam defender Yannick Leliendal caught an opponent's foot, and after VAR intervention the referee pointed to the spot. Koeman Jr. took the responsibility and held his nerve: 1-2. The Telstar supporters from Velsen-Zuid erupted in celebration immediately. FC Volendam, in 16th place, will face Willem II in the promotion/relegation play-off final, with legs scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday.
