Villarreal and Atlético Madrid share the spoils in spectacular 2-2 draw
Villarreal and Atlético Madrid could not be separated in La Liga, finishing level at 2-2. Both sides scored twice in the first half, with the second half ending goalless.
Danjuma opens the scoring for Villarreal
It was Villarreal who set the tone early on. Arnaut Danjuma broke the deadlock after eighteen minutes, assisted by Diego Conde, to give his side the lead: 1-0.
Atlético Madrid respond immediately
The Madrileños were not to be outdone, however. Just two minutes later, in the twentieth minute, Marcos Llorente drew Atlético level. Antoine Griezmann provided the assist for the 1-1.
Own goal puts Villarreal back in front
The match remained full of tension. In the 37th minute, the pendulum swung back in Villarreal's favour through an own goal, making it 2-1.
Sørloth rescues a point for Atlético Madrid just before half-time
Just before the half-time whistle, Atlético Madrid struck again. Alexander Sørloth equalised with an assist from Pablo Barrios, restoring parity at 2-2. Neither side could find the net in the second half, and the match ended all square.
